Employment contract types in the Netherlands

In short

Fixed-term vs permanent contracts and what they mean for you.

Last updated 25 June 2026

Dutch law recognises two main employment contracts: bepaalde tijd (fixed-term) and onbepaalde tijd (permanent/indefinite). A fixed-term contract ends automatically on the agreed date. After 3 consecutive fixed-term contracts or 3 years of consecutive employment, the employer is legally obliged to offer a permanent contract. As an expat, always confirm which type you have — it affects your rights significantly.
