How the Dutch government reaches you: MijnOverheid and the Berichtenbox
How Dutch official post arrives digitally via MijnOverheid and the Berichtenbox — and how to set up notifications so you never miss a deadline.
Last updated 25 June 2026
In the Netherlands, a lot of official correspondence is digital, not paper — and it can land in a mailbox you didn't know you had. Missing those messages can mean missing a deadline, so this is essential newcomer admin.
MijnOverheid: your personal government portal
MijnOverheid.nl is your central, personal government portal. You log in with your DigiD (national digital ID) and can see, in one place:
- Berichtenbox — your official digital mailbox (see below).
- Persoonsgegevens — the personal data the government holds about you (your registration, address, etc.).
- Lopende zaken — the status of things you've applied for.
The Berichtenbox: where official post actually arrives
The Berichtenbox is a secure inbox for messages from government bodies such as the Belastingdienst (the Dutch tax authority) (tax), SVB (the Social Insurance Bank) (pensions/benefits), the RDW (vehicles), your gemeente, and more. Many of these organisations send their official letters here instead of on paper — for example a tax assessment, an allowance decision, or a deadline reminder.
The newcomer trap: if you never open MijnOverheid, you may not see official messages at all — and "I didn't get a letter" is not an accepted excuse for a missed deadline. Set this up early.
Set it up so you don't miss anything
- Log in to MijnOverheid.nl with your DigiD.
- Turn on email notifications so you get an alert whenever a new message arrives in your Berichtenbox.
- Under settings, check which organisations are allowed to send you digital post, and adjust if needed.
- Get into the habit of opening any message promptly — tax and allowance letters often carry response deadlines.
Why this matters for your finances
Tax assessments, allowance decisions and filing reminders frequently arrive only in the Berichtenbox. Keeping notifications on is the simplest way to avoid penalties and missed reclaims.
Set up DigiD first — see how to apply for DigiD. Track the deadlines themselves on your Fiscal Timeline.
