DigiD explained: how to apply and use it as a newcomer

DigiD (national digital ID) is your single digital ID for dealing with the Dutch government and many healthcare and education organisations online. You'll use it to file your tax return, check your pension, apply for allowances (toeslagen), arrange health insurance matters, and log in to your municipality. As a newcomer, getting DigiD working is one of the first things to sort out.

Before you start: you need a BSN

You can only apply for DigiD once you have a BSN (citizen service number), which you receive when you register with your municipality (gemeente). If you don't have a BSN yet, sort that first.

How to apply

1. Go to digid.nl and choose to apply for DigiD with your BSN and details.
2. You receive an activation code. If you have a registered Dutch address, this is sent by post to that address (usually within a few working days).
3. Activate your DigiD with that code. Set a username and password.
4. Install the DigiD app on your phone and add your account — the app is now the main, most secure way to log in.

Verifying your identity (levels of assurance)

Some services need more than a password. With the DigiD app you can do an ID-check: you scan the chip in your passport or ID card with your phone (NFC) to raise your DigiD to a higher, "substantial" level. More sensitive services — healthcare records, DigiD Machtigen, some tax matters — require this higher level, so it's worth doing the ID-check early.

If you've just arrived (or live abroad)

If you can't receive the activation letter at a Dutch address yet, you can often complete identity verification through the app's ID-check, or in person at a DigiD counter (balie) — available at some municipalities and pick-up points. Check digid.nl for the current options for your situation.

Keep it secure

DigiD is the key to your official life in the Netherlands. Never share your password or app, and be alert to phishing — the government will not ask for your DigiD details by email or text.
